13 Social Media Resolutions for the New Year

It’s true, social media is here to stay and it’s important local businesses here in Salt Lake City to understand how they can use it effectively to promote and brand their business. 

 Here are a few social media “resolutions” for 2011.

1-Train and Educate-If you have a person “in-house” that submits articles, writes posts…please, please, please train them on what to write and what to say.  These people are speaking on behalf of your company and it’s important that they are portraying your business correctly.  Can they spell?  If not, either don’t let them post or use spell check.  Make sure you have another set of eyes read the content to ensure that the information they are sending out is accurate.  Is the information they are sending out quality, relevant content that will engage the end user?  Are they engaging with their potential customer appropriately? 

2-Set Agendas-There are so many business owners here in Salt Lake City that have Facebook pages, Twitter account and Blogs, however, these business owners never log into these accounts.  In fact, I was just on a facebook page of a potentail client and he hasn’t posted since last February.  It’s important that you are constantly posting relevant, quality, engaging posts. There are companies out there that are telling their clients to post 3 times a day.  I personally think that is a little excessive but do post and post often.  Have an agenda on the message that you are trying to get out and follow it.  Then, you will need to check back to see what your fans and followers are saying about your posts. 

3-Write Engaging Content-Be the leading authority on your business. If you are a heating contractor write tips on how you can save money on your heating bill.  If you are a weight loss clinic post recipes or simple exercises.  If you are a doctor post healthy living tips.  If you are a plumber post tips on plumbing.  Understand?  Post often and write posts that are engaging.

4-Improve Your Landing Page-If I land on your website and it’s hard to read and I have to search around to see what you do, chances are I’ll just click off of it.  If I land on your website and you don’t give me a compelling reason to give you a call, I have other choices and I’ll probably choose the business that is giving me a reason to give them a call.  If I land on your website and I can’t find a way to contact you, I’ll probably find a business that I can contact, easily.  Be entertaining, be informative and make sure all your content is UP TO DATE.

5-Reward your Followers-Have specials and discounts only available to them.  Have contests and drawings only available to them.  Have coupons and events only available to them.

6-Keep Learning-Social media changes often and it’s important that you change with it.  Know the latest and the greatest and try to be the first to experience new things. 

7-Provide More Reasons for People to Follow You- See #5.

8-Explore Different Sites-We all know it’s imperative to be on Facebook and Twitter but what other sites are you missing out on? How about Four Square?  What about Gowalla?  Ever heard of Plaxo?

9-Remember Social Media Isn’t a Fad-Social Media is becoming an integral part of your marketing on the internet.  Make an effort to learn about social media and how it can promote and brand your business online.

10-Plan your Social Campaigns-Do you want to launch contests?  Do you want to have a viral campaign?  You can’t just set it up and forget about it.  Make sure you follow it and encourage others to participate.  Post often and give people a reason to enter your contest or

share your message.

11-Videos-Do you have a commercial or an informative video about your business?  Make sure you share it online.  Don’t just rely on Youtube…there are other video platforms that you can post your videos on as well.   Vimeo. Dailymotion.  Make sure you tag your videos so that your potential customers or clients can find them.

12-Review Sites-Customers want to be heard and they want answers.  Monitor the rating and review sites and make sure you have a plan how to respond to the positive and the negative reviews.

13-Have Fun-Social Media was intended to be fun so MAKE IT FUN.
